Variant - Thuvia, Maid of Mars - a variant St. John illustration
Fantasy variant dust jacket:
J. Allen St. John did all of the interior illustrations for THUVIA, MAID OF MARS, but the DJ cover used the P.J.
Monahan magazine-serialization cover art (above right). I've always felt that this was a mistake for a couple of
reasons: one - the cover is not a particularly good effort by Monahan, and two - St John's illustrative grasp of the
Martian series will probably never be surpassed (although Krenkel comes close). Therefore, I have designed a dust
jacket using the unfinished St. John art that matches the frontispiece of the McClurg first and subsequent G&D
editions. According to Mr. Normand at Recoverings.com, this unfinished St. John was originally ordered by Vernell
Coriell, but today resides in the Stanleigh Vinson collection. Why it wasn't finished I don't know, but even unfinished
it maintains the vibrancy that was the hallmark of St. John's action paintings for the Burroughs books.
This variant DJ fits both McClurg (spine logo will be changed for McClurg orders) and Grosset & Dunlap editions. For
the front flap, I entered some critical remarks about Burroughs' influence. For the back flap, I added some
remarks about the Martian Series; I then finished with the publisher's logo.
Once purchased, your dust jacket will be wrapped in a mylar dust cover, packed flat, and mailed within forty-eight hours of payment.
Shipping in the USA is free, calculated in the cost of the product.

eMail if there is a problem with fitting your DJ. I'll pre-fit it on my book just to be as sure as possible that all is correct. However, anything
is possible. So contact me immediately if you have a problem.
