Variant - A Fighting Man of Mars - Laurence Herndon front cover from Blue Book Magazine - 1930
A Fighting Man of Mars -Laurence Herndon Variant G&D                                                                                                                                  $8.99
Fantasy variant dust jacket for A FIGHTING MAN OF MARS: The Hugh Hutton dust jacket painting for A FIGHTING MAN OF
MARS is generally considered a poor example of Burroughs illustration. For a complete discussion on how this illo was
produced see Phil Normand's essay on producing his own first edition variant at
recovings.com under the heading of
"Readings." I am in agreement with the general opinion of ERB fans, the Hutton painting is probably the worst of the
front-cover illustrations produced in ERB's lifetime. (The '60s Canaveral Mahlon Blaine illustrations are the worst of all time.)
I have, therefore, created a fantasy variant using the Laurence Herndon illustration from the April 1930 BLUE BOOK
Magazine. I wish I could say that the idea to produce this variant was completely original, but, truth to tell, Phil Normand's
variant using this illustration for the Metropolitan edition inspired me to do the same for the G&D edition. However, in all other
ways the DJ design is my own.  (See comment below.)
To create two versions of this variant, I used a Grosset & Dunlap 1932 reprint and a 1948 ERB Inc. edition for fitting purposes.
I started the design of this variant with the Herndon illustration.  Then used the ACE Books blurb for the back cover design. I
then re-lettered the cover and spine, adding a Burroughs doodad just above the Burroughs logo. The front flap blurb
contains critical comments about the impact of Burroughs on Twentieth Century notables. The back flap blurb is an essay
describing the Martian series.

COMMENT: Phil Normand is without doubt the finest maker of ERB first edition dust jackets on the planet. His web page is
colorful, informative, and easy to navigate. When I finally obtained a GOOD copy of the first edition of A PRINCESS OF MARS,
I did not even consider trying to make it myself. I ordered it from Normand, and it is a thing of beauty. I can't recommend him
highly enough. His website is located at
